Thursday 2nd July -- Saturday, 15th August, 2026

October Gallery is proud to continue its season of Contemporary African art in this exhibition displaying new ceramics by Xanthe Somers and paintings by Yacout Hamdouch. The refectory space also features selected photographic works by James Barnor. Somers' work utilises craft as a way to explores themes regarding work by women, exploitation of labour and eco-racist practices in the Global South. Hamdouch's work focus on colour and form to reflect on how memory, time, experiences and emotions join us together. Finally, Barnor's photography centralises the overlooked stories of the African diaspora.

In our school workshops, led by artist-facilitator Sam Haynes, we will look at these themes by experimenting with multimedia art-making. Across these diverse artworks is a unifying exploration of human experiences. Students will learn to develop techniques by thinking deeply about the symbolism behind colours and materials to represent their experiences.
