Romauld Hazoumè: My Blue Period

The October Gallery is proud to recommence their formal learning programme with My Blue Period, a solo exhibition by the internationally renowned artist Romuald Hazoumè. In this exhibition,Hazoumè revisits his iconic masques bidons (Fr. bidon* – flask, container, bottle), which features a series of masks made from repurposed plastic containers and found materials. As with his other works, My Blue Period offers commentary on the precarious state of the world and adheres to the artist's responsibility to confront abuses of authority.

Through his wittily constructed portraits, Hazoumè moves between collective and individual struggles. In our school workshops, led by artist-facilitator Neysela da Silva-Reed, we will be exploring the different found material we encounter in our lives. Through experimentation and collaboration, students will create their own masks with these materials. Across these diverse artworks is a unifying exploration of human experiences. Students will learn to develop techniques by exploring how themes can be symbolised through colours and materials.
